Adverse Weather Tips For Aircraft

During recent adverse weather, one aviator neighbor overlooked securing their aircraft and an accident occurred. As you can see in the photo and video below, the plane was flipped over by a gust of wind and came crashing into our corporate headquarters in Pompano Beach.

Thankfully no injuries were reported, just some roof tiles damaged as a result of the incident. This just goes to show how important it is to always secure your aircraft properly, no matter what the conditions are like outside!

Failing to secure and tie-down aircraft is one of the most common types of claims for aircraft not in motion. Many aviators know the basics of securing an aircraft, but there are some important steps that can be forgotten during bad weather conditions.

The most important thing to remember is to take your time and be thorough when securing your aircraft.

Some tips for properly securing your aircraft during adverse weather conditions

  • Checking all tie-downs and ropes for damage or wear
  • Making sure the aircraft is on a level surface
  • Securing the tail and wings
  • Using chocks or sandbags to secure the wheels

Add these tips to your checklist to ensure your aircraft is properly secured during bad weather conditions.

Had this been a named storm or hurricane, failure to tie down your aircraft could result in an out-of-pocket loss for the insured. There is a way to protect against this loss. Some Insurance companies have a comprehensive policy with an endorsement for Hurricane Protection Coverage which provides up to $10,000 to relocate each aircraft in the event when US National Weather Service issues a ”Hurricane Watch or Warning”.

Make sure you understand your coverages and obligations during named storms to ensure you are in compliance with your insurance policy requirements.
